he cried out, "Why ask for so much?"

The PhD is not sure of the source of the above words : sounds rather Leonard Cohen-ish.
However, in an enigmatic way, it sums up a society that at present is torn between the haves and have-nots, those who dream and those who demand, and those (mostly the majority of us) who scrape by to make do and have no time to think of anything profound.
Or, one might say, "Why ask for anything?" We have it in ourselves to stand and deliver our own dreams.
